Week 13: END-troduction of Internet

I am really thankful I survived! At first I really know very LITTLE about the internet. That’s why I am always amazed (during class) about Internet. I didn’t know that we are SOOOOO advanced in terms of technology.
Project work
I really LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the project work so much!

Never knew that task souring can be that useful (after we have explored that issue)! And with the different types of technologies (present and future), it brings task souring further to another level.

BUT

YES! Internet is full of wonders. We can expect more advanced in the technologies! Fast: within DAYS! Never be surprised about how fast technologies can developed.

And I need to thank my groupmates!

Without them… I wouldn’t know so much about task souring and do research on it. Furthermore, through our discussions, we had opinions exchanging about what is being taught in class and went on research more.

Blogging
Because of the lack of knowledge about the internet… this blogging session allows me to do research on the various topics and gain knowledge. Even though blogging is something new for me, I really enjoy the process of finding and learning new stuff.

And blogging is an interesting way of gaining knowledge as well.

Show and tell
Haiz! Because I don’t really know what’s going on about the internet… … I didn’t have anything to share to the class.
Even though I learn a lot in class from my classmates who shared...

But it still hurts when I have nothing to share!

ENDING!
I really enjoy the class (including those jokes!)!
For those who read my blog and helped me in classes… …

Still look forward what internet would bring us in the future… (Hopefully soon!)

CAN’T BELIEVE THIS IS MY LAST POST! SO FAST! The semester has ended!
Really hate to end this blogging session!
Hahahah actually I am a little happy that the semester has ended!
Goodbye blog!!!!

Week 12- Future of the Internet

Apple: Hardware Company
 VS
Microsoft: Software Company
VS
Google: Makes almost all income from advertising

Google search is the most powerful search engine!

BUT!
In the recent news, Yahoo and Mozilla announced to replace Google’s search engine (the default search engine) in Mozilla’s Firefox browser to Yahoo’s.

Worst
Apple’s contact with Google, which uses Google’s search engine as the default in Apple’s Safari browser, is expiring next year.
Furthermore, Apple has always been trying to reduce their reliance on Google (RIVALLLLL). Google is the default search engine in Safari (both the web and mobile versions) which means that millions of Mac, iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch ( and more … …) users are exposed to Google’s search engine every day.
If Apple decides to use Yahoo’s search engine as default search engine, this would definitely HURT Google.

Key development of Apple, Microsoft and Google

In 1998, Microsoft is the leading company and also earning the most

At that point of time, Microsoft is so big that it didn’t even consider Apple and Google as rivals.

Google is not even in the picture to fight against Microsoft and Apple.

Microsoft was thought being abused monopoly power on Intel-based personal computers in its handling of operating system and web browser sales. Furthermore, becoming a monopoly and engaging in abusive practices contrary to the Sherman Antitrust Act 1890 sections 1 and 2.

Microsoft is losing its power!! Google is on the rise with their search engine

Apple is rising in the music industry, with invention like Ipod… …

Apple and Google are all climbing up while Microsoft is losing their place at the top

In 2011, Apple became the top with Microsoft behind and Google in its third place.

Who will rise to the top in the future with the advancement of technology?

With the three main companies fighting their way to the top, we can expect (in the future) more choices and amazing technologies.

While they are making their way up, they have already came up with technologies with the “Future” technologies.
The future technologies we thought that it might take centuries to be implemented.

Therefore, WE NEED TO

When web 3.0 kicks in, Internet of Things(IoT) would be a common technology in the market.
Here is a video on Web 3.0!

Before we get used to web3.0… Let me show you an example of web 3.0

IoT in Singapore
Cisco did a study and states that in 2010, the number of everyday physical objects and devices connected to the Internet was around 12.5 billion. Furthermore, the figure is expected to double to 25 billion in 2015 as the number of more smart devices per person increases, and to a further 50 billion by 2020
With more physical object and devices connected in the IoT landscape, IoT will become very relevant in our daily lives. And with the increase of statistic, IoT will be in need!

Actually, we will be seeing web3.0 being implemented in our smartphone in 2015
So we can look forward in using those technologiesssss!

Week 11: Internet and journalism

There is this saying that citizen journalism (INTERNET) has taken over the traditional media.
HOWEVER,

In a survey done by Singapore Polytechnic (SP) students which reveals the changing social media landscape, found out that about 80% of the participants still find traditional media more competent than citizen journalism when it comes to its credibility.
So, even though citizen journalism is getting more popular, traditional media still has a place for transmitting information.

It is undeniable that more local youths are engaging in citizen journalism on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter or Youtube.

Misunderstanding of citizen journalism

The public don’t care about where the source of news comes from. According to the study, almost ¾ of the participants would verify the accuracy of the content they read and almost ½ of the participants would verify the news is from a credible source.

The public just read the news. One of the key findings from the study indicates that citizen journalism has a significant influence in shaping youths’ views towards politics (linking with the previous topic on politics!) as well as their purchasing habits

Social media has made easier for everyone to become a journalist. And citizen journalism is the growing trend! Here is two reasons why citizen journalism in Singapore so popular? (COMBININATION OF SINAPOREANS TWO PAST-TIME)

1. COMPLAIN! COMPLAIN AND COMPLAIN
What is Singaporeans good at?
YES! Citizen journalism is a place for us to vent all our unpleasant emotions or event!

2. PHOTO TIME! SELFIEEEEEEEEE!
What should I take photo of?

YES! Singaporeans take anything and everything. From simplest thing like eating… to complex things like accidents. When we meet accidents, (in the past) we call ambulance or save that person first, but now, we take photo first

Citizen journalist  VS journalist

Qualification/skills needed
Citizen journalist does not need any qualification or skills… some may argue that citizen journalist need skills like writing. However, as compared to journalists, they don’t need to have a certificate or undergo any course

Laws associated to writing
Internet stretches the limits of the law. It is a little more difficult to get punished by the law for citizen journalist than journalist.

Freedom of speech
Citizen journalist has greater freedom of speech than journalist.  After all, journalists are a career. They have less control on what to publish and the content to be published.

Citizen journalism gives public a sense of power and control which can be a good or bad thing.  It depends on how we use it. So, make use of the internet for the betterment of the society.

Week 10: Internet and politics

Singaporeans’ youth are seen as being apathetic towards our politics and I am definitely guilty of it too. I ask myself I don’t care about politics… …

1. It doesn’t matter;
Some matter is more important in certain years
In 1950s, Singapore is in the state of building the country when gaining independent. In that few years, politics is THE MOST IMPORTANT matter at hand! Thanks to Lee Kwan Yew

He formed the PAP
Under his leadership, he builds a very strong foundation for Singapore; hard-wired laws, values, policies, security… … Therefore, when building the country, politics is the upmost relevant, related and important. However, after having a stable and static political state in the country, politics become a “under the carpet” issue.

We start to have other more important issue such as eco-friendly environment, entertainment industry, the social media or fashion.  Furthermore, we did not go through those years that politics is important and needed. Therefore, deem politics as an unimportant matter.

2. What is politics?
Since we don’t understand the need for politics, then why will we be able to understand what politics consist of? Political issues are only discussed among politician or those with higher authorities. Furthermore, politics is a very heavy and complicated topic which not everyone would be able to understand. We only can show our concern and stand through voting.

3. We are spoiled by the government; do we need it?

The government will take care any political issues.
Vikram Nair, a lawyer and MP once said “Political apathy is a luxury you can have when things are going okay,”.  We are living in a peaceful world where political issue is not any near our concern. It is always taken care by the government; and those who do use their power to do illegal stuff, they will be punish by the law, regardless of their status. The government has also established themselves to be perceived as they have all the solutions and ideas. Naturally, when things go wrong, they will find the politicians for answers.

THEN, HERE COMES THE INTERNET
Thanks to the Internet, we start showing our concerns and point-of-view through the internet.  Not only that, we also give our suggestions on what we should do with the topic.
How internet helps in politics?
Social connection. You can connect with more people and garner support! Facebook- page or account. Twitter. Linkin
Provide more opinions. We can share our opinions, suggestions through the internet. Politicians can understand what the public is thinking about. DYADIC RELATIONSHIP.

Reach more potential supporters. Politician massages can spread and get to the intended or unintended audience all at once.

Week 9- Multimedia on the Internet [Intelligence Amplification (IA)-with augmented reality]

Talking about IA… I watched a movie and fell in LOVE with the movie! The movie is… …
BIGHERO
my BAYMAX!

I am not going into the storyline but the IA in the movie. Baymax(IA) is a personal programmed healthcare nurse robot which is designed to improve healthcare of people. Baymax is instantly activated by the sound of distress, and can only deactivate once his current patient states "I am satisfied with my care".

1.  Do what a nurse or a doctor does
Diagnosis
Rating for pain

3. Do what a human do: other than Navigate its way / Avoid obstacles; basically move around
Give hugs
Differentiate between lies and truth

4. Do what a medical machine can do
Simple scan with massive information
Defibs

However, with such advancement of technology, things can turn ugly. Hiro transform Baymax to a killer. MISUSE OF TECHNOLOGY.

One huge concern that we have! IA can be very useful but when we start using it for the bad cause, it will harm us. However, I feel that the advantages will outweigh the disadvantages of IA. Imagine if we all have a Baymax at our side, taking care of our health and giving advices to keep a healthy lifestyle, we will have a better health status.

Other than the movie (future technology), I am going to introduce the augmented reality in the market.

1. AR Cinema (For entertainment)

This app allows you watch a movie scene that is filmed right at where you are standing.

2. Augmented Reality for National Geographic Channel (For educational)

3. Mirror with augmented reality (Informative) Personal calendar events, information search……

Technology keeps on improving; what used to be in our imagination and dreams is slowly coming to life. With such convenience and “cool” factors (bringing out life to another level), I really look forward to what technology can bring us! But at the same time worrying about the consequences we had to face with the advancement.

Week 8- Multimedia on the Internet (Virtual reality)

Today’s topic is:

Virtual reality seems like a new and expensive technology.

However, the idea of virtual reality is not new at all! The history of Virtual reality starts in 1950s(!).
1. Sensorama-Morton Heilig

Sensorama was the earliest known examples of virtual reality. The machine is a theatre that consists of all the senses in an effective manner; therefore bringing the viewers into the onscreen activity.

Features include: stereoscopic display, fans, odor emitters, stereo speakers, moving chair and head mounted television display (for user to experience the movie in 3D).

2.  “Ultimate Display”- 1965 Ivan Sutherland
The display can have people look into virtual world that look as real as the world that we are lived in.

I am quite surprise that the web (internet) develops faster than virtual reality! Since virtual reality starts like 50 years ago?
Then, another concept associated with virtual reality is EXPENSIVE!

1. GOOGLE Cardboard Virtual Reality Kit
(https://cardboard.withgoogle.com/)- go to the website! It’s quite cool!

Here’s a video on how to make it!

You can even make your own by downloading the format and follow the steps.

Now that the technology world is focusing on VIRTUAL REALITY AND AUGMENTED REALITY, these two elements are most likely to develop in speed.

Social Problems of virtual reality is quite worrying. Of course technologies bring in a lot of convenience and heighten experience in life.
1. Indulge in the virtual world- I DON’T WANT TO BE IN THE REAL WORLD
What if people prefer the virtual world more than the real world? The gaming industry has caused many to be addicted in the world that the creators created. Thanks to the heighten experience, people will be even more unable to pluck themselves out from the virtual world.
Furthermore, the virtual world is perfect for us to be in.
Would we become like inception?

Why would we want to go back to the world where there is pain… boredom… and stay at a world where we can build anything with our imagination and live a life without negative incident?

Week 7-Internet security or Internet insecurity

I am aware that there are viruses (in fact many different kinds of virus), hackers, online cheaters... But there is one thing I am shock to know is that ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE CANNOT ELIMINATE MOST OF THE VIRUS! And the companies might release some virus to BOOST THEIR SALES!
ALL THESE YEARS I TRUSTED THEM…I felt like…cheated. Haha

So I went to search for more information about the internet security!
Here it is:
1.  EVERYONE KNOWS YOUR WIFI PASSWORD!

Usually when you sign in to the WIFI in your house or outside, you would click “connect automatically”. If it is a loooooooooooooong or complicated password like à oouihkhu^7GHu, you would not want to type it another time!  Therefore, it is very convenient and time saving. Cause the next time you don’t need to type the password again!
BUT! If you back-up your phone through GOOGLE/APPLE/ANDRIOD........ And they are storing those information in the cloud…… Who can access all these information? Who are taking care of hose information?

 2. Our password is not strong enough

When choosing password for an account, we are always advice to choose a strong one. However, a lot of people still choose a password that is easy to guess. Worst! That password will be reuse and reuse and reuse. So when hackers do their work….

They will know all the passwords you have
Here’s the top 5 password used:
1) password (#1 in 2011 as well)
2) 123456
3) 12345678
4) abc123
5) qwerty
Even though all of us know that we need a strong password, we still using password that are easy to guess.

3. MALWAREEEEEE

Major web Browsers shares their information (like which URLs to flag) on the malware sites and threats. Firefox, chrome, internet explorer… … however, with the advancement of the technology, TONS of new malware that the anti-virus software cannot solve. Fortunately, a 64-bit malware is WAY more difficult to write than 32-bit malware. So we are protected (a little).

Since most of my classmates are talking about how to prevent OR the different types of virus we have…… let me share on how to create a computer virus prank

A harmless one! hahahahh
I tried it myself. And it works...so….next year April’s fool?
