Singaporeans’ youth are seen as being apathetic towards our politics and I am definitely guilty of it too. I ask myself I don’t care about politics… …
1. It doesn’t matter;
Some matter is more important in certain years
In 1950s, Singapore is in the state of building the country
when gaining independent. In that few years, politics is THE MOST IMPORTANT matter at hand! Thanks to Lee Kwan Yew
He formed the PAP
Under his leadership, he builds a very strong foundation for Singapore; hard-wired
laws, values, policies, security… … Therefore, when building the country,
politics is the upmost relevant,
related and important. However, after having a stable
and static political state in the country, politics become a “under the carpet” issue.
We start to have other more
important issue such as eco-friendly environment,
entertainment industry, the social media or fashion. Furthermore, we did not go through those years
that politics is important and needed. Therefore, deem politics as an
unimportant matter.
2. What is politics?
Since we don’t understand the need for politics, then why
will we be able to understand what politics
consist of? Political issues are only
discussed among politician or
those with higher authorities. Furthermore,
politics is a very heavy and complicated
topic which not everyone would be able to understand. We only can show our concern and stand through voting.
3. We are spoiled by
the government; do we need it?
The government will take care any political issues.
Vikram
Nair, a lawyer and MP once said “Political apathy is a luxury you can have when things are going okay,”. We are living in a peaceful world where
political issue is not any near our concern. It is always taken care by the
government; and those who do use their power to do illegal stuff, they will be punish by the law, regardless of their status.
The government has also established themselves to be perceived as they have all
the solutions and ideas. Naturally, when things go wrong, they will find the
politicians for answers.
THEN, HERE COMES THE INTERNET
Thanks to the Internet, we start showing our concerns and point-of-view through the
internet. Not only that, we also give
our suggestions on what we should do with the topic.
How internet helps in politics?
Social connection. You can connect with more people and garner support! Facebook- page or
account. Twitter. Linkin.
Provide more opinions. We can share our opinions,
suggestions through the internet. Politicians can understand what the public is
thinking about. DYADIC RELATIONSHIP.
Reach more potential supporters. Politician massages can spread and get to the intended or
unintended audience all at once.
